Electronics Industry
Electronic components accounted for 43% of electronics output in 2006. Malaysia is one of the world’s leading centres for semiconductor packaging and assembly, output for the key semiconductor sector increasing by 3.6% in 2006 and by a further 4.9% in 2007. Semiconductor output is forecast to increase by 2.3% in 2008 the lower growth due to the weaker global market.

Nanotechnology
Nanotechnology is a priority area under the Malaysian government’s National Science and Technology Plan. There are significant nanotechnology groups at a number of research centers and universities. Most government funding is allocated via the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) for facilities and projects with an application focus. Like most Asia-Pacific governments, Malaysia is seeking a commercial return on its investment. Nanotechnology has been identified as a growth area along with new ICT, photonics and biotechnology.
