The Taiwanese electronics industry is in the process of undergoing a major structural change with the leading domestic companies relocating production offshore, and principally to China to reduce costs. The other major sector is semiconductors, which had grown very strongly. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company and United Microelectronics, the worlds leading semiconductor foundries are both Taiwanese companies with significant wafer fabrication capacity in the country. With Taiwan also having assembly, package, test and design capacity it is a major player throughout the semiconductor supply chain. Output increased by 13% in 2006 and then accelerated to 22% in 2007 but is expected to fall to 5.5% in 2008 in the wake of the anticipated slowdown in the global market, according to market research report Electronics Industry in Taiwan.
